How to Choose Plumbing Fixtures...
April 7, 2010
The world of plumbing fixtures is wide and varied. Every
fixture has endless iterations and models and colors
and sizes and how are you supposed to choose?
Well, the truth about plumbing fixtures, is that they
aren't quite as complicated as they may seem. Check out
these guide to bathtubs, toilets, bathroom sinks, and
faucets, and you'll be well on your way to making a very
informed decision.
BATHTUBS
There are five bathtub styles.
1) Enamel, Cast-Iron - These tubs achieve a nice, old-style
look and are often finished with a China-glazing. One
down side is that they are incredibly heavy tubs. Hard
to move. Hard to install. However, they fill with water
quite quietly. These tubs are typically five or six feet
long (very rarely longer) and can be found in a few styles.
They run for about $250.
2) Molded Plastic - The look of these tubs is similar
to the cast-irons, but molded plastic is actually much
thicker. Despite this thickness, this tub is very, very
lightweight.

Thus, it's an easy choice if you like to remodel. It
won't damage pre-existing tile or fixtures. Base price
also begins at around $250, but depending on the model,
it can get much more expensive.
3) Shower Stalls - Shower stalls vary wildly between
size, style, structure, and materials. Pricing varies
accordingly.
4) Enameled Steel - More often than not, this tub is
sold white with a ceramic glaze coating. It is simple,
but functional, and costs around $200.
5) Fiberglass - Fiberglass tubs range from very simple
to luxurious and complicated. They often integrate spa
features and can cost many thousands of dollars.
TOILETS
This may seem like common sense, but BUY WHAT IS COMFORTABLE.
Like it or not, we spend a good deal of time on the toilet,
and comfort is the primary consideration.
The higher the gallon per flush number (1.6 gallons
max), the more effective your toilet will be, the fewer
clogs you'll have, and the less you'll need a plunger.
However, the more gallons you use per flush, the higher
your water bill will be.
If you'd like to save some money on your water bills,
choose an efficiency toilet. These often use almost .5
gallons less water per flush.
Finally, a popular choice that has recently emerged
is the "dual-flush" toilet. These fixtures
offer a button both for liquid and solid waste. Obviously,
the former uses much less water per flush.
BATHROOM SINK
Sinks are perhaps the most used fixture in the bathroom.
We use them after every visit to the toilet, when we
brush our teeth, wash our faces, and more.
Thus, we must choose our sinks carefully!
V Shaped Vessel Sinks are very stylish and popular right
now. They are often made with eye-catching materials,
and should be considered by those who strive to create
an aesthetically pleasing bathroom atmosphere.
Pedestal Sinks are also aesthetically pleasing. However,
they do not offer any under-sink storage. This is a deal
breaker for most families, but could be a nice option
if you are looking for restaurant or business fixtures.
If you are looking for practicality, there are many
sinks that are manufactured along with over-counter or
under-counter storage. These package deals are extremely
convenient. They are ideal for families, especially those
with children. |
